What's the Purdue Cannon trophy?

Purdue Cannon: a cannon Purdue students brought to Champaign in 1905 to fire after a win; Illinois fans took it, it sat on a farm for decades, and it became the trophy in 1943.

How did the Purdue Cannon start?

Purdue beat Illinois 62-0 in Champaign on November 22, 1890, still the biggest margin in the series. In 1905 Purdue students hauled a cannon to Champaign to fire if their team won, and after the 29-0 win, Illinois supporters found it in a culvert and took it. Quincy Hall kept it at his farm near Milford, Illinois, and when the series resumed in 1943 after an 11-year break he suggested it become the trophy. The series has been close, with Purdue holding a narrow all-time lead.
